Assistant Professor of Special Education Position

The Department of Teacher Education at Texas Woman's University (TWU) in Denton, Texas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Special Education position beginning in Fall 2024. Opportunities for summer teaching are expected.

The Position

The position is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment. Successful applicants will hold a doctoral degree in Special Education or a Special Education related field and must be well versed in the foundations and methodologies of Special Education. Applicants who are near completion of the terminal degree will be considered, but the terminal degree must be obtained by the start date of the position.

Candidates will be expected to:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Special Education.
  • Serve as a faculty member in the Department of Teacher Education and the Special Education Program.
  • Serve as a field supervisor for both undergraduate and graduate students, as needed.
  • Support the educational needs of TWU's student population.
  • Collaborate with department colleagues to plan curriculum, align curriculum and courses to state and national standards, and ensure that the needs of students are efficiently and effectively met.
  • Participate in departmental, college, and university committees and other service opportunities.
  • Develop a sustained program of research in special education.
  • Support the university's strategic student recruitment initiatives.
  • Support a data-driven approach to instruction, program evaluation, and decision making.

Required Qualifications

Appointment is determined by the candidate's record of significant contributions commensurate with assignments in areas of teaching, mentoring, or other instructional activities; scholarship, research and/or creative activities; and university, professional, and community service. The following are the required qualifications:

  • Ph.D/ Ed.D. in Special Education or a Special Education related field.
  • Developing a program of research and dissemination in the field of Special Education that includes conference presentations, publications in peer-reviewed journals, and pursuit of grant funding.
  • Ability to teach in varied instructional modalities (F2F, hybrid, online) as needed.
  • Ability to advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, including doctoral students.
  • Experience in integrating technology in educational settings and across various learning platforms.
  • At least 3 years K-12 teaching experience with students with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior university teaching experience, especially online teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated service contributions at the university, state, and/or national level.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, mentoring, and advising student populations similar to TWU.

The Department of Teacher Education in the College of Professional Education

The Special Education Program is housed in the Department of Teacher Education within the College of Professional Education. The college includes the School of Library and Information Studies; the Department of Human Development, Family Studies, and Counseling; the Department of Literacy and Learning; and the Department of Teacher Education.

The Special Education program in the TWU Department of Teacher Education offers coursework leading to initial teacher certification through the undergraduate B.S. in Education degree, the M.Ed. in Special Education, the M.Ed. in Special Education with Educational Diagnostician certification, the Post-master's Certificate of Advanced Study: Educational Diagnostician, and the Ph.D. in Special Education.

The Department of Teacher Education also offers the Master of Arts in Teaching; the M.Ed. in Teaching, Leadership, and Collaboration; the M.Ed. in Educational Leadership; the Ph.D. in Education, Leadership, and Organization; the Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Teaching; and Post-master's Certificates of Advanced Study for Principal and Superintendent.
