The LSC-Tomball Health Science Building is a 60,000-square-feet three-story complex that houses the Surgical Technology, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Nursing and Pharmacy Technology programs. The facility provides numerous classrooms, a medical library, simulation labs, an operating room, a clean room, a sterile room and additional educational resources.

Job Description

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Surgical Tech Skills Instructor works with faculty to provide students with hands-on surgical tech experience in a laboratory setting. Position assists the surgical technology faculty in providing learning activities and support that will lead students to the achievement of laboratory course objectives. Additional responsibilities relate to maintenance of the surgical technology lab and supplies. Skills instructors cannot provide teaching functions without a qualified faculty member being present.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide assistance to Faculty in the laboratory; including, but is not limited to, mentoring students and demonstrating material covered in lectures, assisting with the preparation of materials for hands-on and classroom activities, inventorying, maintaining, and storing equipment, materials, and supplies

2. Monitor lab safety protocols and notify the Surgical Technology Program Director of incidents in the laboratory environment and equipment repair, maintenance and replacement needs

3. Ensure learning environment enhances student intellectual and skills development; give students measurable actions to improve skills, verbal feedback in an objective manner and answer questions

4. Act as an ambassador of the Surgical Technology program

5. Responsible for other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to mentor students in the laboratory setting
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision
  • Knowledge of FERPA and confidentiality regarding student progress and information
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office products
  • Knowledge of the lab duties and responsibilities
  • Flexible and creative to perform multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work well in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

The work requires some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. The work may require specific, but common, physical characteristics and abilities, such as above average agility and dexterity.

WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:

  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office and/or laboratory environment with exposure to safety hazards typical of that in a medical lab environment

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Surgical Technology Certification from NBSTSA
  • At least 2 years of work experience as a surgical technologist
Salary

Hourly Pay Rate is $27.70
