The Language Technologies Institute (LTI) at Carnegie Mellon University is a world-renowned research and education hub at the forefront of natural language processing, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interaction. Established within the School of Computer Science, LTI pioneers innovative approaches to understanding, processing, and generating human language in both written and spoken forms.

LTI is seeking a Sponsored Research Administrator to join the team. The Sponsored Research Associate plays a crucial role in managing various aspects of research grants and contracts for multiple faculty members and laboratories within LTI. This encompasses fiscal management, compliance, and the development and management of proposals across multiple moderately complex grants with differing end dates. They interpret and apply regulations and guidelines for program submission and funding, both at the university and agency levels, and provide consultation to faculty on proposal planning and execution. Additionally, they are responsible for developing forecasts and budgets, overseeing post-award management, and coordinating with other university departments and sponsoring agencies, such as OSP and SPA.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Provides financial reporting to faculty on various research grants and for various programs and discretionary accounts on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Conducts variance analysis; researches the causes of variances between planned and actual expenses. Works with other areas of the university (Office of Sponsored Projects, Sponsored Projects Accounting, Procurement, etc.) on a regular basis to solve complex problems related to labor allocation, accounting, and related issues.
  • Establishes accounts in financial systems, re-budgets funds and monitors or modifies awards and expenditures. Completes expense and labor distributions transactions.
  • Approves invoices. Monitors computing and other facility charges
  • Interprets regulations and guidelines for program funding (both university and agency) for multiple moderately complex grants. Provides monitoring of grants and contracts to ensure expenses are being paid according to contracts. Prepares renewals and reports for sponsoring agencies.
  • Provides faculty members with various options and scenarios that can be used in a proposal's planning or during the execution of the work (i.e., assessing labor allocation and distribution across multiple awards, etc.). Develops forecasts, and budgets for faculty members and assists in proposal creation and submission, including the preparation of proposal budgets, often with multiple subcontractors.
  • Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • 1-3 years of experience in an educational environment, working in the area of grants and research administration.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
