Pay Range

$110,700 - $142,128 Annually for an SES.1

$132,810 - $170,556 Annually for an SES.2


Job Description

We have an opening for a Security and System Software Developer on a team that researches, designs, develops, maintains, and integrates software and hardware solutions for protecting LLNL computing services and systems within the Livermore Computing high-performance computing center. In this role, you will apply software development experience and security knowledge towards the support of authentication, authorization, security information and event management, web application security, and identity management technologies utilized to maintain secure operating environments for Livermore Computing resources and critical institutional services at LLNL. This position is in the Livermore Computing Division within the Computing Principle Associate Directorate.

This position requires an on-site presence, and therefore will have limited telecommuting options.

This position will be filled at the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will

  • Implement and maintain software systems that enable secure access and protection against threats and attacks using security best practices.
  • Configure and manage deployed services associated with the centralized authentication and authorization services.
  • Integrate custom software, such as authentication modules and authorization mechanisms, into open-source software packages or commercial products to enhance or extend the security controls and capabilities of our multi-site collaborative environment.
  • Explore, prototype, and deploy state-of-the-art data and network security analysis tools.
  • Monitor production services and respond to system problems and user issues.
  • Perform software engineering using established development practices, tools, and processes for achieving robust software quality; including testing, configuration management, change management, and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Additional job responsibilities, at the SES.2 level

  • Independently apply in-depth technical expertise to solve complex problems existing throughout a heterogeneous distributed environment. This will involve working with technical staff with different areas of expertise throughout the division and laboratory.
  • Provide security consulting and perform security review and evaluation of proposed system designs, applications, and commercial products.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Basic proficiency in developing software in a team environment.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute creative solutions to complex problems.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with application developers, system programmers, and other technical staff.
  • Knowledge of fundamental networking and distributed computing concepts.
  • Knowledge of basic security algorithms and their uses including encryption and hashing, security engineering, application security, system security and network security principles.
  • Ability to work on a 24x7 on-call rotational schedule.

Additional qualifications at the SES.2 level

  • Master's degree in computer science or related field or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • General knowledge of fundamental networking concepts and experience with network troubleshooting.
  • Ability to set priorities and independently resolve complex problems in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience developing software with two or more of the following programming languages: C, C++, Java, Perl, or Python.
  • Experience with data management languages and protocols such as LDAP and SQL.
  • Experience with one or more of the following security networking technologies and protocols: RSA SecurID, Kerberos, SSH, RADIUS, OAuth/OIDC.
  • Experience administrating F5 - BIG IP web application firewalls.
  • Knowledge of applied encryption algorithms and security protocols (RSA, TLS).
