Summary

Facilitates pharmacy technician staff training and competency, experiential education, and practice advancement. Coordinates new technician on-boarding. Develops technician training experiences/competencies and creates new relationships for teaching and training opportunities. Collaborates with Pharmacist Clinical Education Coordinator to implement technician in-training program. Assists with onboarding and communicating clear objectives of program. Creating technician-in-training schedules. Tracking and evaluation of technician in-training progress. Creating a development plan for technician in-training needing extra training.

The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator works under supervision of Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacy Coordinator.

Experience and Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Three (3) years hospital Pharmacy or equivalent technician experience.
  • Registration with Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern is required.
  • National certification with Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) preferred.
  • Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by ACPE required in Sterile & Hazardous Compounding and Investigational Drug Services only.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required by start date.

Job Duties

  • Performs job responsibilities in accordance with organizational and departmental policies, procedures, performance improvement objectives and environmental/infection control standards.
  • Coordinates technician education, schedules, training and orientation with pharmacy management assistance.
  • Assists with technician evaluations.
  • Monitors daily technician activities, training, priorities, staffing and workloads, adjusting schedules according to departmental needs.
  • Contributes ideas and identifies opportunities for process improvements to better deliver prompt and safe patient care.
  • Makes good decisions, accepts responsibilities, coordinates daily workflow in assigned area.
  • Provides leadership to other technicians and maintains competency in multiple areas.
  • Fills all orders, floor stock, and fill lists.
  • Performs IV calculations and prepares all IV admixture using proper aseptic technique.
  • Handles all intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Delivers medications.
  • Performs extemporaneous compounding.
  • Repackages bulk medications into unit dose per departmental policy and procedure.
  • Enters charges and credits and restocks returns.
  • Provides service by receiving incoming calls and prioritizing based on urgency or nature of requests.
  • Audits and signs out all controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines and organizational policies.
  • Identifies and corrects discrepancies and reports unusual usage patterns and trends.
  • Completes medication area inspections and removes and documents expired medications.
  • Assists with ordering, managing and monitoring drug inventory in fiscally responsible manner and is cognizant of appropriate PAR levels in medication storage areas.
  • Enhances personal growth and development by participating in educational programs, in-services and meetings.
  • Participates in new employee orientation and training.
  • Treats co-workers and organizational and departmental property and resources with respect by maintaining clean, orderly and stocked environment.
  • Works and solves problems with minimal supervision.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Work requires good organizational skills.
  • Basic computer skills, data entry, filing. English (speaking, reading, writing).
  • Good general health and stress coping ability.
  • Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.
  • OSHA Category III.

  • Work is performed primarily in office area.

Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimum require prior approval of Vice President for Human Resources Administration or his/her designee.
