WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW (Job Overview):

As part of a defined training plan, this position is reporting the Laboratory Director and includes participation in multi-disciplinary research in collaboration with clinical teams, lead quality improvement initiatives, contribute to process improvements, develop, and validate new procedures, and train lab staff, medical students, residents, and fellows. Assist ASHI approved Laboratory Director with management of staff, budgets, environment, work processes, and compliance. Provide expertise in the overall operation and administration of the HLA laboratory including tracking, recording and reporting of test results promptly, accurately and proficiently, and assuring compliance with ASHI standards at American Red Cross. Provide support, development and/or leadership guidance to all volunteers.

Perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures and other applicable Federal, State, and local regulations. All resumes will be assessed by Dr. Neng Yu

WHERE YOUR CAREER IS A FORCE GOOD (Key Responsibilities):

  • Ensure testing systems are developed and used for each of the tests performed to provide quality laboratory services for all aspects of test performance, which includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases of testing.

  • Ensure high-quality clinical lab test results required for patient care with established turn-around time. Design and develop research work done in the HLA Laboratory to make productive advances in the fields of Immunogenetics and/or Histocompatibility, which are consistent with the overall goals of the American Red Cross Blood Services.

  • Review clinical test reports and apply expertise to resolve difficult or unusual clinical testing problems at any time from either the transplantation communities or from in-house staff or colleagues. Keep abreast with the development of the HLA fields by reading and presenting journal articles, presenting to local, state, and national audiences. and participating in National and International Workshops.

  • Develop, validate, and implement the most advanced test procedures after the proper stringent validations. Organize and direct special projects to evaluate, improve and/or develop new test procedures, techniques, and reagents, some of which may be offered as clinical services locally and nationally. Collect and analyze data, interpret results, and adjust the course of the project as necessary.

  • Provide effective leadership in coaching, recognizing, developing, rewarding, and motivating staff to exceptional performance. Ensure technical staff participates in continuing education relevant to histocompatibility and/or immunogenetics testing at least to the level of the minimum requirements outlined by the ASHI Accreditation Review Board.

  • Act as a resource in the field to staff members and area and national hospitals. Seek new accounts, contracts, and services to ensure the continued success of the laboratory.

  • Establish policies appropriate for the function. Interpret and recommend modifications to company-wide policies and practices.

  • Provide backup to the lab director in trained and competent areas.

Standard Schedule: M-F Day Shift

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED (Minimum Qualifications):

  • Education: Ph.D. or MD/DO and ASHI Certification as a Director.

    Experience: Minimum 4 years of hands-on experience in all phases of the Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics field, including operations of a high-volume clinical HLA testing laboratory or equivalent combination of education and related experience, is required

  • A minimum of two years of leadership experience.

  • Skills & Abilities: Extensive scientific HLA knowledge and technical skills in the following areas preferred: HLA serology and molecular genetics, including NGS, platelet serology, HLA antibody screening /identification, Flow Cytometry Crossmatch, chimerism study, etc. Demonstrate excellent customer service and a positive professional image. Have a working knowledge of databases, IT, and genomic software. Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, collaboration, and interpersonal skills. Must possess demonstrated attention to detail and teaching/coaching abilities. Must be able to work on a team and independently to solve problems.

    Travel: up to 50%

    *Combination of candidate's education and general experience satisfies requirements so long as the total years equate to description's minimum education and general experience years combined (Management experience cannot be substituted).
