At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Karman line - the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space!

You will be part of an extremely knowledgeable and well-rounded team of GSE and Tooling Engineers who support New Shepard launch operations. You will design, analyze, procure, and commission ground support equipment, ground support systems, and industrial mechanical equipment to help launch, recover, and maintain New Shepard's Launch Vehicles. You will also help identify ways to streamline operations, so we can fly more often.

In this position you will work across the New Shepard program to understand and define changes to our flight Concept of Operations throughout transport, launch/recovery, and maintenance operations. You'll take your own designs from concept and requirement development, through design, analysis, fabrication, and first-use by the maintenance and operations teams.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop technical requirements derived from program and project objectives.
  • Design and analyze lifting equipment, ground support equipment (GSE), working platforms, and other heavy/industrial mechanical systems.
  • Perform Failure Modes, Effects, and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), and other system safety analyses, for mechanical systems.
  • Provide schedule and budget inputs for assigned projects.
  • Recommendations to sub-system critical initiatives, technical maturation, and capturing the best methods.
  • Assist with procurement and build, including answering vendor questions, redlining drawings, dis-positioning hardware issues, writing assembly procedures, writing proof plans, and providing hands-on support through implementation and verification.
  • Work entire product lifecycle for assigned projects, hardware, and systems including product design, development, and support for procurement/build.
  • Perform root cause analysis and develop corrective actions for assigned non-conformances.

We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in mechanical, civil, or aerospace engineering or similar.
  • Minimum 5 years meaningful experience designing GSE and Tooling, throughout the product life cycle.
  • Experience working with multi-functional teams including maintenance and operations teams.
  • Experience developing operational procedures for testing, commissioning, and maintenance of GSE/Tooling.
  • Strong organization and project management skills, to track, manage and prioritize multiple simultaneous tasks.
  • Advanced experience using CAD and FEA software (Creo and ANSYS preferred).
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards for GSE (e.g. ASME B30.20/BTH-1, OSHA, AISC-360, ASCE-7, Aluminum Design Manual).
  • Functional understanding of basic hydraulic/pneumatic mechanical systems.
  • Experience designing and analyzing steel and aluminum welded structures
  • Hands-on experience in constructing and/or repairing a diverse range of mechanical components and systems, acquired through personal pursuits and/or professional experience.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a diverse, equitable and inclusive culture.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering
  • PE license in Civil/Mechanical/Structural
  • Experience with designing/analyzing aerospace GSE and Tooling collaborating with critical flight hardware, such as umbilical systems, for an operating launch vehicle.
  • Experience with crafting hydraulic/pneumatic mechanical systems.

Compensation range for on site WA applicants is:

111,690 to 156,366
