SUMMARY:

The Police Patrol Sergeant supervises activities and personnel for shift operations. Ensures enforcement of local, state and federal laws. Responsible for coordinating activities with shift personnel to fulfill the objectives for the university police department.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Establishes and supervises procedures for shift operations.
  • Develops and maintains schedules for assigned officers.
  • Supervises on the job training of officers and assigned dispatchers.
  • Locates and reports any unsafe lighting areas on the campus.
  • Assists with investigations, as needed, provides follow-up on cases, and ensures Patrol Officers follow-up on cases.
  • Reviews reports written by all personnel for accuracy and completeness.
  • Enters required and assigned reports and data in the computer for the department.
  • Conducts internal investigations as requested by the Internal Affairs supervisor.
  • Conducts special assignments as requested by the Patrol or Administrative Lieutenant, or higher supervisor.
  • Acts as a liaison with other law enforcement agencies to ensure quality communication.
  • Counsels employees concerning compliance with department policies and procedures and takes disciplinary action if required.
  • Available for Patrol Sergeant related duty outside of assigned work hours. This duty may include, but is not limited to, answering work related phone calls and returning to work for patrol or administratively requested duties.
  • Oversees and assists with the training of Patrol Officers and Security Officers.
  • Serves as a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Instructor. Creates and instructs programs and classroom lectures for University departments and faculty members that may pertain to the field of law enforcement. Participates in New Employee Orientation for the Department of Human Resources, when requested.
  • Serves on an interview board for the hiring of new personnel, if requested.
  • Works as a supplemental Patrol Officer, when needed. Works supplemental duty assignments when needed. Works special duty assignments when needed.
  • Contributes to the effective team management of all relevant problems, issues, and opportunities.
  • This job description shall include, but is not necessarily limited to, the above duties. May perform other duties assigned to maintain operation and services.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent and thirty (30) hours of college or university credit from an accredited regional college or university as identified by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) * 211.1*.
  • *TCOLE 211.1 states that the College or University must be accredited by one of the following:
    • An institution of higher education that is accredited or authorized by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, or an international college or university evaluated and accepted by a United States accredited college or university.
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Five (5) years law enforcement experience required. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends. Ability to communicate effectively with all segments of the campus population. Ability to function under adverse and stressful conditions and deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner. Ability to understand and apply rules, policies, procedures and laws.
  • Licensing/Professional Certifications: Must have a Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) license, with a minimum of an "Intermediate" certification, and show proof of up-to-date state mandated training for the TCOLE 2 year unit and 4 year cycle. (All system university police will be required to meet minimum licensing standard requirements as required by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) * 217.1). Valid Texas driver license and good driving record required.

  • Other Requirements: Background investigation and testing to include psychological examination required. May be required to submit to polygraph exam and drug testing. Due to the position you are applying for requires access to CJI systems, if it is found you have any of the following convictions on your criminal history report your application will be disqualified:

    Class A Misdemeanor Conviction

    Class A Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication

    Family Violence Conviction

Open arrest for any criminal offense (felony or misdemeanor) will be disqualified until disposition. The following will be a disqualified for the amount of time listed:

Class B Misdemeanor Conviction - 10 years Class B Misdemeanor Deferred Adjudication - 10 years

PREFERRED EDUCATION / SKILLS/ EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree. Three (3+) years of law enforcement supervisory experience. University law enforcement experience.

SUPERVISION OF OTHERS:

Patrol, Security, and Telecommunicator positions, as needed.
