The Health and Human Services Health and Specialty Care System (HSCS) is comprised of nine psychiatric hospitals located throughout the state, and one youth residential psychiatric center in Waco. The HSCS is a hub of excellence for forensic mental health and complex psychiatric care, with all facilities accredited by The Joint Commission. The hospitals provide state-of-the-art treatment that is recovery-oriented and science-based. The state hospital system uses innovative approaches to treat mental illness through comprehensive care for adults, children and adolescents. These in-patient hospitals focus on safe, supportive, high-quality psychiatric care for acute to chronic conditions. The other part of the HSCS is the State Supported Living Centers (SSLCs) The SSLCs provide campus-based direct services and supports to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities at 13 locations across Texas. SSLCs provide 24-hour residential services, comprehensive health care and behavioral treatment services. Residents can also use skills training, occupational services, physical and speech therapies, and vocational programs. Other services help to maintain connections between residents and their natural support systems.
