Job Description:
Vehicle Driver II works a designated 8 hours shift, with working hours as early 5:00 a.m. to as late as 7:30 p.m. and rotating shifts to include working weekends and holidays. Works under the moderate supervisor of a Food Service Manager/s.
Delivers, orders, receives, stores, and issues food and supplies in a state institution. May work in freezer and refrigerated vaults.
Maintains the necessary records and routine reports. May be required to assist in serving kitchens and/or central kitchen with serving, dish washing, sweeping and mopping floors, prepping, and/or cleaning of equipment. Work is performed according to prescribed rules, regulations and schedules with detailed instruction when needed. Work is performed under supervision of the Food Service Manager/s; however the more familiar or routine phases are performed without appreciable advice or instruction from the supervisor. May perform other duties as assigned by the Food Service Manager/s. Shifts to include working on weekends and holidays. May be required to work unusual or extended hours of a disaster or operational necessity.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.


Delivers, orders, receives, stores and issues food and supplies.

May work in freezer and refrigerated vaults stocking and rotating food items; stocks milk; cleans produce; works in the control room; keeps freezers and refrigerated vaults clean, sanitized, and organized.

Washes transport vehicles and trailers; records mileage in vehicle log books; gas vehicles; change cargo belts; conforms to campus speed limit.

Strips and cleans central kitchen floors; cleans wall/ceiling fans; pick up, pick-ups trash from serving kitchens/central kitchen.

Recording and reporting when bringing in new inventory or taking out new inventory.

Operates motor vehicles such as automobiles, vans, trucks, and buses to pick up and transport various types of cargo.

Prepares and maintains records and logs related to vehicle operations; ensures the required documentation is accurate and complete.

Performs minor vehicle maintenance, makes minor repairs, and fuels vehicles.

Ensures that vehicle cargo capacity is not exceeded, drivers and passengers use safety restraints, and cargo is distributed to reduce maximum axle loading.

Ensures the safe and secure storage of cargo; reviews and verifies inventory and shipping documents.

Assists in the safe loading and unloading of cargo.

Responsible for maintaining delivery vehicles at optimal condition.

May operate vehicle power lift gates, manual hydraulic forklifts, and dollies.

Performs related work as assigned.


Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Working knowledge of methods used in delivery, receiving, storing and issuing of items peculiar to the state institution.
Knowledge of the kind and grade of food/supply inventory handled at the institution; and the methods and procedures used in keeping records and makes related reports.
Must be able to drive a vehicle particular to the institution and keep it in good sanitary condition. License is necessary as regulated by institution.
Must possess physical ability to lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds at any given time and to withstand excessive cold temperatures (i.e. working in freezer); Ability to stand and walk on tile concrete floors for long period of time.
Ability to follow schedules and instructions in operating motor vehicles; to obey traffic rules and regulations.
Ability to get along with co-workers and accept directed supervision; to instruct and supervise inexperienced subordinates; to follow oral and written instructions; to keep simple records; to maintain order and discipline; to be able to write understandably for comprehension by others.
Ability to participate in on-the-job training and satisfactorily complete same.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Must possess valid Texas driver's license or obtain it no later than 90 days after hire date. Applicants with an out of state driver's license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure. Eligible driving record required based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
Must attain Food Handler certificate within 60 working days
Initial Selection Criteria:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the eight grade with a copy of a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Six (6) months of work experience operating a motor vehicle under conditions similar to those required by the position.

Ability to maintain accurate records, write effectively and legibly.

Ability to work in all weather conditions.

Must meet eligibility requirements for a commercial driver's license if required by position.


Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS OIG List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities.
Males between the ages of 18 - 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
Flexibility in work hours may be required for this position.
The position may be required to work overtime and/or extended hours.
