Physician II works in the Admissions unit and has the responsibility for establishing the clinical non-psychiatric diagnosis on all patients newly admitted to San Antonio State Hospital. Coordinates with various referral hospitals on commitment of all new patients and ensures that they are medically stable prior to transfer. Covers the Minor Treatment Center (MTC) when needed. May perform OD duty (Medical Officer of the Day) and as such is responsible for direct patient care, interviews, evaluates and initiates treatment as appropriate. Assists the Nurses in treatment of patients per telephone communication and evaluates walk-in patients either for admission or for transfer to another facility. Also may evaluate employees at SASH, diagnose, treat and refer as appropriate for injuries on the job. Performs history and physicals. Must be knowledgeable in the EMTALA rules and regulations.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.

1. Demonstrates age specific competency.
2. Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations.
3. Establishes diagnoses in accordance with current nomenclature based on assessments. Prescribes medications as clinically indicated in a rational manner in compliance with professional standards of practice.
4. Examines and evaluates the medical problems of patients assigned to his/her care and provides the necessary treatment and/or refers for consultation and specialty assistance; follows-up on consultation recommendations and abnormal laboratory work.
5. Participates in continuing education to improve knowledge and to maintain licensure. Maintains current in all CT&D required training.
6. Performs physical examinations on all admitted patients; if medical conditions are discovered makes appropriate referrals and orders diagnostic studies, labs, X-rays as needed and documents in CWS in required timeframe.
7. Provides emergency services to patients and/or staff who are medically ill or injured on the job.
8. Screens patients to determine presence of medical illness and determines the ability to manage and/or refer to a general hospital.
9. Serves as a member of the Medical Staff team through participation in assigned committees.
10. Supports continuous quality improvement of patient care regarding action steps, treatment interviews, and therapeutic results as evidence by record review. Actively participates in performance management activities.

Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Must have knowledge and experience in milieu therapy. Must demonstrate leadership and good interpersonal relationships especially with members of the treatment team and consumers.
2. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Licensed to practice medicine in Texas, plus successful completion of a residency program approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Foundation or equivalent body. Three years post-residency clinical experience in that specialty, plus certification by that specialty's board of the American Board of Medical Specialties or equivalent body. Physicians with board certification or equivalent in two specialties, or in a specialty and a subspecialty meet the certification and experience requirements for Physician III status. Meets all other criteria for employment and medical staff appointments, as appropriate.
Initial Selection Criteria:
1. Must be licensed by the State of Texas Medical Board.
2. Must possess an active Federal Controlled Substances Registration.
Additional Information:
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and HHS OIG list of Excluded Individuals/Entities. Males between the ages of 18-25 must be registered with the Selective Service.

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at
a state-operated facility.

The salary offered will follow HHS starting salary guidelines which are typically made at or near the posted minimum of the salary range.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, healthcare workers are considered to be at significant risk for acquiring or transmitting hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (chicken pox), tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and influenza. All of these diseases are vaccine-preventable. As a result, state hospital policy requires employees be vaccinated according to their level of contact with patients. In the event you choose to not be immunized for the influenza virus, you may be required to wear a mask and take other protective measures.
