Working Title: Pipelayer

Supervisor: Foreman

General Description of Position: Lay pipe or box for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Perform any combination of the following tasks: grade trenches or culverts, position pipe, or seal joints.

Essential functions and responsibilities listed below:

  • Checks slopes for conformation to requirements, using levels or lasers
  • Cover pipes or boxes with earth or other materials
  • Connect pipe or box pieces and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement or glue
  • Cut pipes or boxes to required lengths
  • Install and repair sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems
  • Install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels
  • Grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools
  • Lay out pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints, and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
  • Align and position pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing
  • Dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand , buy directing excavators, or using trenching tools
  • Locate existing pipes needing repair or replacement, using magnetic or radio indicators
  • Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices
  • When not performing the above essential duties and responsibilities, may assist in other operations as designated by the supervisor

Specific Equipment and Materials to be used: Carpenter's hand tools, small/medium/large power tools, bench tools (saw, drill, grinder), concrete saw, chipper, sander, paving breaker, jackhammer

Other Requirements: Must have current valid driver's license and have a safe driving record.

Safety Policies and Practices: The employee in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the company's safety policies and procedures as described in the company's safety manual.

Education: High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)

Experience and Training: Three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Work environment: The work environment/physical demands characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and high and/ or precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
