Working Title: Structures Foreman

Supervisor: Project Superintendent

General Description of Position: The Foreman is the company’s first line supervisor responsible for constructing a very specific portion of a project utilizing a crew of workers and construction equipment. The Foreman is responsible for the safety and well being of all employees under their control, and the safety of the traveling public.

Planning the Work:

  • Generally, the foreman plans for only two or three days in advance. The Foreman must keep their crew at maximum productivity in a safe and healthful working environment. The Foreman must continually strive to eliminate idle time, waiting time, slow work, rework, unsafe working conditions, and unsafe acts for each and every member and machine in the crew. The Foreman must ensure that the crew has everything it needs, at the start of every shift, to do a productive day’s work, such as: having knowledge and information about the task and how it fits into the whole project, sufficient number and type of crew members, equipment, permanent and temporary materials, tools, survey layout, organized work area, during the course of every day the foreman must jot down, in list form, anything needed.
  • Participate in planning meetings for your specific operation. Review training requirements for upcoming tasks and coordinate that all employees receive proper training in a timely manner.
  • Study written plans provided by the superintendent.

Doing the Work:

  • Conduct a toolbox safety meeting with your crew once per week. Discuss topics that relate to what your crew will be working on for the week as well as past accidents. Lead Stretch and Flex daily.
  • Meet with your crew for five minutes every morning and communicate to each of them their individual tasks and the crew’s goal for the day. Discuss the crew’s needs such as equipment, tools, materials, and manpower. Have an additional five minute meeting if the crew changes work tasks or location.
  • Lead your crew during the course of the day and see to it that they remain safe, productive, and that their need for information, materials, equipment, tools and supplies is constantly met, without interruption.
  • Meet with the crew at the end of every shift to confirm hours worked, tasks accomplished, and to review tomorrow’s plan and needs..

Checking the Work:

  • As the work progresses during the course of the day, check for line and grade, fit and finish as often as necessary to produce high quality work.
  • Check all traffic control in your area periodically during the day and at the end of the shift. Make all corrections immediately.
  • Report all deviations to the project superintendent.

Equipment:

  • The foreman is responsible for the safe and proper utilization of every piece of equipment under his direction, including job pickup trucks. Ensure operators read and understand the operator’s manual(s).
  • The foreman must see to it that job pickups are maintained and that hourly employees do not drive them home.
  • At least twice a day, make a visual inspection of all equipment to identify deficiencies and state of cleanliness.
  • Report all deficiencies in writing to the superintendent. Do not operate machinery when it could result in damage to itself or to personnel.

Materials:

  • The foreman is responsible for permanent and temporary materials delivered to the jobsite.
  • Coordinate receipt of materials with the superintendent.
  • Report all deliveries to the superintendent.
  • Make written notes on the receiving tickets of shortages or damage.

Project Administration:

  • The foreman reports time for his crew every day at the end of the shift on forms or devices provided.
  • Ensure accurate cost coding using the codes provided.
  • Ensure that crewmember’s hours are correct every day by having crewmembers sign off on the time card every day.
  • Ensure that equipment hours are correct every day for every piece of equipment.
  • On the backside of the time card, accurately describe what your crew worked on for the day, reporting actual quantities of permanent work installed and materials consumed.
  • Document all toolbox safety meetings on the forms provided and turn in to your superintendent each week.
  • Fill out on the form provided and turn in to the project superintendent investigation facts that apply to any accident that occurred to any personnel, including a crewmember, a member of a sub, an owner’s rep, a material delivery person or member of the public.

Education: High School Diploma or GED and five (5) years of experience

Safety Policies and Practices: The employee in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the company’s safety policies and procedures as described in the company’s safety manual.

Other Requirements: Must have current valid driver’s license and have a safe driving record.

Work environment: The work environment/physical demands characteristics described here are representative of those the employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; and high and/ or precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
