Job Summary

Thisposition provides accounting support for the organization to ensure the financial effects of gas purchase operations are accurately recorded, analyzed and reported in a timely manner in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and in compliance with regulatory, state and federal requirements.

This position is responsible for the preparation and review of the cost of gas recovery journal entries, maintenance and reconciliation of gas storage balances, analysis and reporting of imbalance transactions, asset management agreement transactions, Sox key controls and other general ledger journal entries. This position also performs varied work assignments and will participate in special projects.

Essential Functions
  • Efficientlyand accurately analyze information, collect and cross-reference supporting documentation to prepare monthly cost of gas schedules and journal entries for month end close.
  • Perform monthly analytical review of gas costs by jurisdiction and resolves volume or cost related discrepancies.
  • Coordinate and reconcile accounting transactions between affiliate companies.
  • Coordinate and reconcile over/under balances with the Rate department in support of jurisdictional rate filings.
  • Ensure gas cost recovery methodologies are in compliance with all applicable and current regulatory tariffs.
  • Research accounting and regulatory issues as needed.
  • Analyze and book imbalance transactions with third-party and affiliate companies.
  • Perform materials and supplies inventory (M&S) accounting duties as needed including researching and recommending proper accounting treatment of inventory transactions. Review M&S material spend KPI and book accruals as needed.
  • Prepare and maintain Regulatory Commission schedules to be used in annual filing or reporting.
  • Analyze monthly gas storage inventory activities and maintain gas storage inventory balances.
  • Prepare monthly gas cost over/under journal entries and pertinent reconciliation schedules to ensure proper recovery of cost of gas.
  • Coordinate and respond to rate case data requests and provide support to regulatory auditors.
  • Lead or assist with preparation of various ad hoc requests and special projects.
  • Lead or assist with various cost of gas improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in various special projects as assigned by management.
Education Description
  • Bachelor's Degree Required. Area: Accounting, finance or business related with over twenty four (24) hours of Accounting.
  • Professional certification such as a CPA or a master's degree is desirable.
Experience
  • Aminimum of five (5) years experience in the natural gas industry with either Auditing, financial accounting, regulatory accounting and/or gas accounting.
  • Experience in the Gas Cost Accounting or Financial Accounting Department of a local distribution company (LDC) is desirable.
Additional Qualifications
  • Competencyin inter-company transaction accounting in a complex organization.
  • Experience or proficiency in the use of Business Warehouse to perform various analysis and reporting duties is a plus.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply detailed knowledge of requirements necessary to comply with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) regulations and internal accounting and financial procedures.
  • Able to demonstrate and apply computer expertise and knowledge of both integrated mainframe software (SAP FIN/ACCTNG module(s)) as well as PC-based e-mail, database, spreadsheet and proprietary software including Excel and Word.
  • Able to recognize and handle confidential information in a discrete manner.
  • Able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills (including diplomacy, tact and active listening skills) and to communicate effectively with co-workers, management and members of other departments.
  • Able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Able to work collaboratively in a team environment and across departmental, organizational and functional lines to achieve results.
