This position will end effective one year from start date. Subsequent annual renewal of employment will be based upon performance review, progress towards research goals, and continuation of funding.

Purpose

This position will end effective one year from start date. Subsequent annual renewal of employment will be based upon performance review, progress towards research goals, and continuation of funding.

Responsibilities
  • Work on an established research project aimed at characterizing a protein produced by a bacterial symbiont and at determining its role in the symbiosis. This will require molecular biology methods, proteomic methods, imaging methods, and insect dissection. It also requires troubleshooting experiments and good communication with lab members working on related topics.

  • Maintain a detailed lab notebook, compile, analyze and summarize data as needed for reports and for publication and dissemination, and contribute to writing publications.

  • Act as liaison with Environmental Health and Safety to ensure proposed disposal of chemical and biological waste, as described.

  • Maintain lab consumables, including plastics, PCR gel bench supplies, and glassware.

  • Other functions related to general laboratory procedures and activities as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology or other related scientific field. At least two years of biology research experience at the undergraduate level required. Ability to communicate clearly, maintain a laboratory notebook and present results graphically and orally. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with insect rearing, culture, and dissection. Experience extracting protein from insect sources. Experience with Western blots and antibodies.

Salary Range

$35,568 + depending on qualifications

Work Shift
  • 40 hours/week is required, and most of this time should be during normal business hours (e.g. 8:00am-5:00pm), although numbers of hours/day and days/week can be negotiated and may change depending on what projects are being pursued.
