Business Unit Controller

Summary:

The Business Unit Controller is a director-level position reporting to the corporate controller and leads the finance and accounting functions of the business unit, including managing the financial accounting and reporting process, financial audits, internal controls, tax and treasury functions. The Business Unit Controller establishes relationships with key external parties, including customers, vendors, auditors, and service providers. They also champion internal relationships with cross-functional leaders, driving for continuous improvements and developing their team members.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leads the monthly closing, prepares the business unit financial statements including consolidating multiple entities if applicable (Commercial), and presents a monthly reporting package.
  • Establishes operating cadence for the business unit including planning/forecasting activities, weekly staff reviews, and daily KPIs.
  • Organizes annual audit requests for the business unit to support the preparation of audited financial statements for ownership interests and financial creditors.
  • Partners with other business unit leaders to identify opportunities for improvement including revenue generation, cost reduction, and cash cycle improvements.
  • Manages the treasury function for the business unit and supports the CFO with managing operating liquidity by collaborating in an accurate 13-week forecast
  • Manages the business unit general ledger, sub-ledgers and keeps organized records for all financial-related transactions including capital purchases, financing, and other significant matters.
  • Manages the business unit accounts receivable and payables functions and drives for commercial action as needed.
  • Ensures internal and financial controls for the business unit - facilitates accounting policies for the company and ensures compliance with GAAP.
  • Supports executive leadership and peers with ad hoc analysis and reporting for the business unit.
  • Leads the business unit team by creating a transparent environment, motivates individuals using coaching techniques and paces performance by offering timely 'continue' and 'consider' feedback.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Strong communication / organizational skills in all formats and levels of the organization
  • Proficient at leading period-end closings, management analysis and financial commentary

  • Effective decision making and problem solving skills
  • Proficient to advanced PC Skills including (but not limited to) MS Word, MS Excel (including PowerBI), MS Power Point, email, internet and customized database management
  • Must be able to read and/or interpret numbers and letters correctly
  • Must work with numbers to calculate timeframe and evaluate costs and losses
  • Must demonstrate organization and prioritization skills to manage time
  • Experienced professional with high standards of excellence and adherence to deadlines
  • Self-starter able to function effectively in a fast-paced growing company and adapt to change
  • Strong financial modeling ability for utilization in budget and forecasting processes
  • Ability to synthesize various, independently generated data points into a cohesive analysis

Education and Experience:

Education: Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related discipline

Experience: Eight (8) years of progressive experience leading finance and accounting functions

Three (3) years of experience managing a team and building a positive culture

Substantial ERP experience

Preferred: Graduate degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related discipline

Public accounting experience (including CPA)

Process improvement experience a plus

Experience leading systems implementation

Exposure with tax, audit and treasury functions
