Job Description:

The Journalist-in-Residence (JIR) is a practicing journalist (or someone with practicing journalism experience) who will serve as the part-time adviser to Campus Publications, providing support to the student-run newspaper and yearbook. The JIR is responsible for supervising and monitoring the business and advertising operations of the publications, dealing with day-to-day business and editorial problems that arise, and creating training programs and recruitment for student staff members.



The JIR is also responsible for encouraging articles that build on Trinity University's mission; assisting students in developing and executing a strategy to cultivate a network and foster discussions.

JOB DUTIES

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serves as the advisor to Campus Publications, providing support to the student-run newspaper and yearbook. Provides ongoing critiques of publications (post-publication) and is available to consult with students as needed. Reviews content in advance of publication ONLY when requested by students.

  • Supervises and monitors the business and advertising operations of the publications and effectively deals with day-to-day business and editorial problems that arise.

  • Creates training programs and recruitment for student staff members. Facilitates Fall and Spring training programs for each publication.

  • Appears in the newsroom and is visible/available to students on a regular basis each week. A consistent schedule must be made available to students.

  • Coordinates three weekly evening meetings during the semester with Trinitonian Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor, Mirage Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor and Business Manager and Trinitonian Advertising Director.

  • Teaches a one-credit practicum course in the Department of Communication. This course meets weekly only at the beginning of the semester. After that time, students are asked to work as interns in the Trinitonian newsroom. The JIR will continue to supervise their progress for the remainder of the semester.

  • Attends six Board of Campus Publications meetings a year and facilitates hiring of new student executives. Meets monthly with the Chair of the Board of Campus Publications.

  • Encourages articles that inform students, staff, faculty, alumni, and neighbors about what is happening in the Trinity community. This includes collaborating with various teams to assist them in developing ideas and handling writing and editing of the pieces upon request.

  • Assists students in developing and executing a strategy to cultivate a network and foster discussions. This may include moderating a discussion list, attending relevant conferences, etc.

  • Identifies linkages with other work being done on campus and assists in seeking out collaborators beyond the program.

  • Maintains the Program Operations Manual. Provides operations support and interfaces with university offices and systems, with professional organizations and with vendors as necessary.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Cooperates and collaborates with other employees in the spirit of teamwork and collegiality and interacts with confidence, patience and integrity to provide professional leadership during emergencies.

  • Complies with all Trinity University policies and guidelines.

  • Performs other duties as required.


EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in journalism, communications or related discipline.

Preferred: Master's degree from an accredited institution in journalism, communications, or related discipline.


EXPERIENCE

Required: Two (2) years of experience working for a newspaper, magazine, or other journalistic publication.

Preferred: Two (2) years of experience (post-graduate) working for a newspaper, magazine, or other journalistic publication and experience with student publications (such as the Trinitonian) in any capacity.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Required:

  • Relevant skills as a practicing journalist such as the ability to find and develop news stories, work under a tight deadline, interview sources, refrain from personal bias in reporting, etc.

  • Independence of judgment, strong attention to detail, and excellent people skills.

  • Exemplary communication skills, written and verbal.

  • Demonstrated commitment to exemplary customer service.

  • Ability to take initial direction, ask questions, manage time and pursue work with limited supervision.

  • Ability to pivot quickly as project mandates shift.


OTHER:

  • Will be expected to work approximately 20 hours per week during each semester (15 weeks in the Fall and 15 weeks in the Spring) as well as during winter and summer breaks in a limited capacity. Required work over winter and summer breaks may include planning and coordinating training for the start of each semester, supervising an intern over the summer (if one is assigned), etc.

  • Is a one-year, renewable contract.




Trinity University will post non-exempt staff positions for 5 business days and exempt staff positions for 10 business days. Faculty positions will remain open until filled.
