Job Summary

The Department of Neurology at UT Southwestern Medical Center is a nationally recognized leader in the comprehensive management of neurological conditions. Our vibrant department comprises more than 75 full-time faculty in 12 subspecialty sections, supporting a spectrum of complex and innovative approaches to neurological care, a broad range of novel research programs, and a panoply of educational opportunities for trainees. The department offers access to the latest innovative treatments in one of the most rapidly advancing fields of medicine. Through collaborations with the O'Donnell Brain Institute, the department is building state-of-the art facilities for drug and device testing and bringing current and new faculty together for collaborative research on brain disease therapy.

The Neurology Division of Statistical Analysis and Planning team partners with the UT Southwestern Clinical Informatics Center, which is a dynamic interdisciplinary community of physicians, scientists, students, researchers, and developers whose goal is to leverage the knowledge from research and experience in biomedical informatics, data sciences, social sciences, clinical sciences and other domains for the generation of knowledge and informatics-based products or services to improve quality and safety, the efficiency of patient care, and the health of people in general. We are looking for a motivated Data Scientist to join our interdisciplinary team for an exciting opportunity in developing natural language processing and machine learning tools to leverage electronic health record data to support clinical care and research in the neurosciences.

A multi-year Data Scientist position is available in the Department of Neurology and the Clinical Informatics Center at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Working under general direction of the Principal Investigator, this position provides analysis and develops and evaluates natural language processing and machine learning algorithms and software for clinical informatics problems. The Data Scientist impacts data acquisition, management, and analysis in basic, translational, and clinical research, including clinical trials.

Experience and Education

M.S. in Computer Science, Informatics, Bioinformatics, (Bio)mathematics, (Bio)statistics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field OR B.S. with demonstrated experience in broadly defined areas of informatics or bioinformatics. Two (2) - four (4) years post-graduation experience in data analysis, natural language processing, and/or scientific software development.

Job Duties
  • Analyzes and develops formalisms, algorithms, and software for applications in biomedical research.
  • Develops and maintains software tools and infrastructure for resolving specific problems.
  • Performs the development, testing, and revision of programs in a team with diverse bioinformatics expertise.
  • Advises and assists users and other personnel in analyzing, defining, and resolving computational problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Work requires excellent communications and interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism and competence in dealing with a variety of individuals.
  • Work requires knowledge of statistical and scientific research design. * Work requires knowledge of software code development.
  • Work requires ability to analyze/evaluate data and make appropriate decisions/recommendations.
  • Work requires ability to communicate technical information to clinicians and biomedical researchers.
  • Work requires ability to identify and clarify, and help others identify and clarify, individual responsibilities and objectives within the framework of the common goal.
  • Work requires ability to develop leadership in a team of data analysts.
  • Work requires responsibility for recording time to users for whom statistical work has been done.
