PURPOSE

Responsible for development and implementation for an assigned Forest Product Commodity Category. Responsible for setting the strategic direction and leading commodity trading activities for the category, at a corporate level. Leads a team of Commodity Buyers within the category using in-depth product and sourcing knowledge, detailed study of vendor and customer trends, and an understanding of risk management to achieve company goals. Develops business plans regarding the category. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of the Forest Products Supply Chain. Provides leadership within the organization and with vendor partners to work towards achieving goals. Supervises and oversees the work of the Buyers and Assistants and ensures they are properly trained, evaluates their performance and sees to their development and career planning.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversees vendor management towards negotiating contracts, establishing programs, and leading regular daily commodity trading/purchasing activities for assigned category.
  • Develops and implements category strategies and sourcing plans for commodity forest products that optimize value and build strategic competitive advantage for Builders FirstSource.
  • Develops and maintains strategic vendor relationships through management of the overall strategy for sourcing materials to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Selects suppliers, conducts supplier negotiations, establishes and monitors supplier agreements.
  • Interacts with and leads a team of buyers, as a "player/coach", which collaborate directly with the field organization and vendors regarding product assortment, cost of goods, negotiated vendor programs, promotional programs, market trends and other needs that arise. Includes assisting field operations in the identification and procurement of specialty items, price and availability of products, freight/carrier information, order status, and timely processing of orders
  • Conducts complex negotiations with suppliers to obtain the best quality and cost in order to ensure end-users needs are met. Negotiates delivery, terms and conditions, and pricing.
  • Solicits suppliers for materials/products/services through both Requests for Quote (RFQ) and informal channels, receives and evaluates proposals, quotations and bids.
  • Develops and performs continuous, critical market research and analytics to identify leading indicators and trends as they pertain to commodity pricing, supply and demand. Interprets and creates actionable strategy for direct reports and the corporation around same research and analytics to deliver upon corporate metrics, strategy and to create advantageous commodity cost position for BFS.
  • Collaborates with Transportation team to assure timely pick-up and delivery of commodity products to all functional units, including called ready notices, communicating lead times and communicating competitive information as it relates to transportation rates and availability.
  • Negotiates settlements on rejected or defective items.
  • Contributes in determining and leads implementation of corporate inventory, risk management and finance strategies as it relates to the category. Prepares required information for periodic financial reporting of the organization as it relates to the category.
  • Coordinates with accounts payable/credit department to resolve credit issues or complex pricing problems to avoid delays to end user.
  • Measures and reviews supplier performance and leads supplier continuous improvement programs ensuring suppliers meet quality requirements and applicable regulatory requirements and initiating appropriate action when quality or compliance deficiencies are identified.
  • Mentors and/or provides functional advice to commodities buyers and assistants. Provides work direction, hires/fires, conducts performance evaluation and personal development of subordinates.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises assigned employees including staff selection and training; planning, assigning and directing work; conducting performance reviews; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate, and lead team members to their optimum performance levels and career development.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred;
  • Ten (10) years of related experience;
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in procurement of Forest Products required, SYP preferred

COMPETENCIES

  • Comprehensive knowledge of material management and procurement function for category
  • Demonstrated competency in understanding supply chain dynamic of specific category
  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience in commodity trading and/or purchasing
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent negotiation skills
  • Ability to use tact and skill in dealing with other staff, management and vendors
  • Strong analytic skills to interpret data and analyze trends
  • Ability to compose effective and efficient reports
  • Exhibit proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and an enterprise resource planning (ERP) program
