Job Description:

ABOUT THE INTERNSHIP

Meow Wolf is proud to provide one of a kind experience to university students through our internship program. We are currently working on building a Meow Wolf exhibition in Houston, Texas, and are looking for creative, passionate interns to join our installation team to take this exciting project to completion.

This is a part-time internship with no more than 29 hours per week and is expected to be in person at the Houston project site. Students will be paid $18.00 per hour and will be working with company leaders and experts in their field.

WHAT WE OFFER OUR INTERNS

  • An hourly wage of $18.00

  • Part-time flexible internship, no more than 29 hours per week.

  • College credit is available through your university upon request.

  • A letter of recommendation upon successful completion of the internship.

  • Support from a Meow Wolf mentor who is assigned to each student.

  • In field experience and specialty training.

  • Access to Meow Wolf senior leadership, and the opportunity to grow and learn from industry experts and company leaders.

WHAT YOU NEED TO APPLY

  • Enrolled at a Houston-based college or university.

  • Live within commuting distance of Houston for the internship time period.

  • Discretion. Many of our projects are still a secret.

  • Commitment and self-directed initiative.

  • Availability for the entire Internship duration from June 10th-August 16th, 2024

  • This is a part-time position, to be within the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. MT Monday through Friday.

ABOUT THE ART TEAM TASK FORCE

The Art Team Task Force (ATTF) adds finishing touches on all elements of the exhibition and produces spontaneous art on site. We are responsible for addressing gaps in scope through site-reactive art and finding creative solutions for hazard mitigation. Additionally, we add dimension, textural elements, propping/set dressing, and an overall layer of "frosting". This builds cohesion, adds to the maximalism, and highlights the artist's hand in a way that distinguishes our exhibitions from others in the immersive entertainment industry.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in a Texas-based college or university.

Art Team Internship Job Description

As an intern for the Art Team Task Force (ATTF), you will be an integral member of and creative collaborator on the Houston Exhibition. This role includes, but is not limited to, creating artistic components, muraling, touching up existing art, and overall installation support for the Houston Exhibit.

Successful candidates will have experience working in a collaborative environment and will demonstrate proficiency working with a variety of art materials and techniques. They will display willingness and potential to both lead small teams and assist other artists and specialists on projects. They will coordinate closely with fellow project stakeholders, including Creative Directors, Field Art Directors, Production Designers, and Creative Producers. They will bring out the best in others, both creatively and culturally, as a considerate and reliable team member.

Project tasks may include concept ideation, materials estimates, production planning, gathering supplies, material preparation, research, design development, artwork assembly, construction, and finish elements; as well as maintenance of work area, and storage of tools and projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Assist Creative Directors and Art Directors with in-field creative and design execution.

  • Coordinate between Creative Directors, Field Art Directors, Collaborating Artists and Vendors to orchestrate the larger creative vision.

  • Assist with communication between Creative Directors, Art Directors and Project Managers as the needs arise.

  • Help to continually update the Art Direction packages for the anchor spaces with updated photos and other useful information.

  • To assist in brainstorming creative solutions to inevitable complications

  • Assist with the supervision of in-field design and fabrication of guest spaces.

  • Will perform interdisciplinary hands-on work.

  • Assist, and occasionally lead, team members on various projects

  • Display a notable sense of attention to detail and accuracy of work

  • Maintain exceptional organizational skills and an ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment

  • Show a willingness to take initiative on projects or tasks without being prompted

  • Work closely with Field Art Directors and Creative Directors to ensure efficient project development

  • Maintain fluid collaboration with Art Team Task Force members

  • Adapt to changing needs and taking on new tasks

  • Anticipate issues and use logical judgment with basic guidance and instruction

  • Solve problems creatively and in close coordination with project stakeholders and team members

  • Utilize interpersonal communication skills to work with diverse personalities

  • Demonstrate exceptional reliability, punctuality, and professionalism

  • Implement basic administrative skills to help estimate and plan for production in collaboration with managers

  • Work well in groups and individually

  • Support a positive work atmosphere by demonstrating flexibility and enthusiasm for collaboration

Qualifications:

  • An artistic practice in a visual medium like, but not limited to, painting, sculpture, textile arts, or Scenic Design.

  • A portfolio with recent work that demonstrates artistic and production capabilities that are relevant.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and remain calm under pressure.

  • Ability to problem-solve quickly under stressful conditions.

  • An ability to verbally and visually communicate creative ideas.

  • Computer literacy skills

  • Ability to work with Google Suite

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how a major entertainment project is constructed and coordinated with various stakeholders.

  • Learn leadership skills that maintain the core vision of the project while simultaneously empowering the creative input of the whole project team.

  • Help with making design decisions on a moment's notice to keep the project moving.

  • Learn how to communicate with outside artists, construction managers, vendors, operations managers, and other project personnel.

  • Working on a construction site and how it operates.

  • Learn how to manage projects with hard deadlines.

Work Environment

This internship operates within a professional construction site and warehouse. This role also includes standard equipment use such as powered and non-powered tools and various art making materials. Interns will comply with company and OSHA standard workplace safety protocols. Interns will routinely use respirators in the presence of any dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, gasses, smokes, sprays, or vapors.

Physical Demands

Interns will occasionally be required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The intern must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those of medium work. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
