HDR Engineering is currently seeking multiple Transmission Line EITs/Designers to join our growing and nationally ranked team of Power Delivery professionals in Texas. Locations include Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Austin, Round Rock, San Antonio and Houston.

Primary Responsibilities

You will be part of a rapidly growing team working on a variety of exciting projects that will test your engineering skills and set you on a path for career growth. As an integral part of a team, you will prepare engineering designs of high voltage transmission lines ranging in scale from simple structure replacements to large greenfield design projects. This is an excellent growth opportunity for a self-directed individual who is eager to learn and take on new challenges.

Working under the direction of Project Manager(s) and Project Engineer(s) your role will encompass the following:

  • Preparing conceptual and detailed transmission line designs.
  • Modelling transmission lines using PLS-CADD software including line routing, structure spotting, structure selection and design, hardware selection and fit-up, and conductor selection.
  • Performing associated structural and clearance calculations and checks in accordance with applicable industry codes.
  • Preparing foundations designs using software such as LPile, Caisson or MFAD
  • Preparing construction release packages for high voltage transmission lines including plan and profiles, structure load trees, structure assemblies and details, stringing charts, foundation schedules and details, and bills of material.
  • Liaising and communicating closely with internal and external project stakeholders, including environmental, real estate, construction, maintenance, substation, telecommunications and project management.
  • Effectively managing multiple tasks for multiple projects while being cognizant of schedule and budget.
  • Performing site visits during the design, construction and as-built phases of projects

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Experience interpreting and applying requisite industry design codes such as NESC, IEEE, ASCE and ACI.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Strong written and confident verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated and ability to take initiative.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience of overhead transmission line design experience preferred.
  • Experience using PLS-CADD for analysis and design of transmission (or distribution) lines preferred.
  • EIT certification or ability to pass the FE Exam within 6 months strongly preferred.
  • Experience using AutoCAD and/or Microstation considered a plus.
  • Prior experience consulting or working for an electric utility considered a plus.
  • Understanding of geotechnical reports and experience in foundations design using software such as LPile, Caisson or MFAD considered a plus.
