The City of Mesquite offers a wide variety of employment opportunities including: General Office and Clerical, Maintenance and Trades, Specialists, Seasonal, Part-Time, Professional, Managerial, Executive, Police, Fire, and various internship opportunities. We accept applications for these positions only when a vacancy occurs. Currently, the City of Mesquite has 1034 full time employees and 263 part time employees. In addition, we hire approximately 130 seasonal positions each year. The Mesquite Police Department has an authorized strength of 229 sworn police personnel. The Mesquite Fire Department has an authorized strength of 199 sworn fire personnel. We proudly offer a competitive compensation package. In fact, we are one of the highest paying agencies in the State of Texas for entry level police and fire positions. In order to stay competitive, we conduct annual salary surveys to determine how positions at the City of Mesquite compare to similar positions at other cities in the DFW Metroplex of similar size. Benefits Summary: The City offers a choice of three Medical Plans: HRA OAP, Basic OAP and HMO through CIGNA HealthCare. Employee health coverage goes into effect the first day of the month following 30 days of employment. Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. The City Dental Program is available under one of two dental plans: a managed plan (DHMO) and an indemnity plan (DPPO). Coverage is available to all full-time employees at group rates. Basic Group Life Insurance protection is provided to eligible full-time employees in the amount of two times the annual salary as recorded at the beginning of each year. Voluntary Supplemental Life and Voluntary AD&D Insurance are also available to full-time employees. Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): All employees appointed to positions designated to work 1,000 hours or more per year must participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System. TMRS is a qualified tax deferred retirement plan under Section 401 of the IRS. Seven (7) percent of gross earnings are deducted each payroll as a pre-tax deduction and deposited into the member account. When an employee becomes vested and retires, the City provides 2-to-1 matching contributions. Other benefits are: Social Security, Tax Saver Program (Section 125 Flexible Spending Account), Voluntary Long Term Disability, Deferred Compensation Plans, Direct Deposit, Paid Holidays, Paid Vacation, Sick Leave and Personal Leave. |
